Web Summit Qatar returns to the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center from 31 January to 3 February 2027. That is roughly 17 weeks away. The 2026 edition drew 30,274 attendees from 127 countries, 1,637 startups and 931 investors, so four days in Doha now put a founder within walking distance of more capital and more partners than most will meet in a year. The founders who get the most out of it are rarely the ones with the biggest booth. They are the ones who arrive with a clear goal, a warm investor pipeline and their paperwork done. This playbook works backwards from opening day.

What the last edition tells you about this one

The numbers from 2026 show what is at stake and how competitive it has become:

Weeks 17–13 (October): set the goal and apply

Decide what a successful week looks like before you spend a riyal. Pick one primary objective, such as closing a seed round, signing two enterprise pilots or setting up a Qatar entity, and let it drive every other choice.

Then apply to the startup programme. Web Summit places startups in three tiers, as described in its selection guide:

  • ALPHA: pre-investment, or under US$1 million raised.
  • BETA: launched companies with traction, often previous Web Summit participants.
  • GROWTH: companies expanding internationally, many having raised more than US$3 million.

Applications are scored from 0 to 100 across growth potential, impact, product and team, and pitch quality. ALPHA startups receive three event passes, one day of exhibition space, a profile on the website and app, lounge access and a dedicated success manager. The programme also gives access to investor-to-startup meetings, PITCH, masterclasses and Mentor Hours. Write your application as if it were your first investor screen, because in practice it is.

Weeks 12–6 (November–December): build the materials and the pipeline

This is where most of the value is created. The following is general fundraising guidance, not Qatar-specific rules:

  • A one-page summary. Paul Graham's advice in How to Raise Money still holds: a summary of no more than a page, in matter-of-fact language, covering what you plan to do, why it is a good idea and what progress you have made.
  • A clean data room. Cap table, incorporation documents, key contracts, financial model and current metrics, organised so an interested investor can move to diligence the week after the event.
  • A demo that works offline. Conference Wi-Fi is unreliable; record a short walkthrough as a backup.
  • A target list. Shortlist 30–50 investors and partners whose stage, sector and geography fit, and research who from each firm is attending.

Plan to meet investors in parallel rather than one at a time. Graham argues that talking to investors in parallel stops any single one from dragging out a decision, and a four-day event is a rare chance to create that parallel process in one place.

Weeks 5–1 (January): book the meetings and prepare the licence

Reach out to your target list with a short, specific request: a 20-minute meeting on a named day, with your one-pager attached. Use the event app's networking features as well, but warm introductions through your existing investors, accelerators or advisors will convert better.

If a Qatar entity is part of your plan, prepare for the QFC desk now. At the 2026 event, the QFC offered waived registration and annual fees for the first three years, plus a tax credit for the first three years, for firms that registered during the event and selected at least one technology activity from its approved list. Banking was available on site through QNB and Doha Bank. The 2027 terms have not yet been announced, so confirm the current package with the QFC before you rely on it. Have your corporate documents, shareholder details and business plan ready so you can apply in one visit.

Finally, rehearse. Run your pitch with founders who will interrupt you, and prepare clear answers on why Qatar and the wider GCC fit into your plans.

The four days and the four weeks after

  • Protect your objective. Divide the team: one person on the stand, one in meetings, one on partnerships. Log every conversation the same evening.
  • Follow up within 48 hours with the data room link and a proposed next step.
  • Read signals honestly. Graham's rule is to treat investors as saying no until they make a definite offer with no contingencies. Enthusiasm in a hallway is not a term sheet.
  • Keep the company moving. Momentum matters: if your numbers improve between the first meeting and the second, investors move faster.

How this fits Qatar National Vision 2030 and Startup Qatar

Web Summit Qatar is not just a conference; it is part of the national plan. The Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), the current plan for delivering Qatar National Vision 2030, aims to make Qatar one of the top 10 destinations in the world for investors and companies, and calls for an innovation system led by the private sector. The event is backed by a permanent organising committee with ministries, Invest Qatar, the Qatar Investment Authority and others.

Startup Qatar, Invest Qatar's one-stop platform for founders, was launched ahead of the first Web Summit Qatar. At the 2026 edition its pavilion brought together the Qatar Free Zones Authority, QFC, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Qatar Development Bank, Media City Qatar, Hayya and others, offering business setup, funding programme access and immigration support. If you are considering equity funding through QDB's Startup Qatar Investment Program, read our guide to its START and GROW tracks before you arrive.

What to do next

  • This week: write down your single objective for the event and submit your startup programme application.
  • By mid-November: finish your one-pager, data room and offline demo.
  • By December: build a target list of 30–50 investors and partners and start warm introductions.
  • Early January: confirm meetings, check the QFC's 2027 incentives and prepare licensing documents.
  • During and after: follow up within 48 hours and treat only firm offers as commitments.
