Startup Qatar's UN Award: Pitching QIA-Backed VC Funds Through the Invest Qatar Gateway
- بواسطة Falak
On 26 October, Invest Qatar received the 2026 United Nations Investment Promotion Award for its work through Startup Qatar. It was selected from 48 entries from 40 countries. The award is good news for the ecosystem, but founders need to know what sits behind it. One of the most practical tools Startup Qatar has built is the VC Funding Module on the Invest Qatar Gateway. It puts the profiles of Qatar-based venture funds, most of them backed by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), in one place and lets you pitch them directly. This guide explains how it works and how to use it well.
According to Invest Qatar's statement, as reported by Gulf Times, entries were judged on innovative investment promotion and facilitation, on how well they mobilise sustainable foreign direct investment, and on their contribution to digital transformation and sustainable development. Since Startup Qatar launched in February 2024, Invest Qatar says the programme has:
The same statement says the Gateway now connects entrepreneurs with 16 venture capital funds set up in Qatar through QIA's Fund of Funds programme, and that more than 500 startups have used the platform to engage with them. For a founder, those last two numbers matter most: the funds are reachable, and many of your peers are already using the route.
QIA's Fund of Funds programme invests in venture capital managers on the condition that they build a real presence in Qatar. On 1 February 2026, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs announced an additional US$2 billion, taking the programme from US$1 billion to US$3 billion. QIA said this brought the number of supported fund managers to 12, with Greycroft, Ion Pacific, Liberty City Ventures, Shorooq and Speedinvest joining. Participating managers are described as opening their first international office in Doha and encouraging portfolio companies to set up regional headquarters here. QIA also said Qatar-based startups and portfolio companies of participating partners will get access to compute power from Qai through a QIA and QDB partnership.
The practical point: these are not funds that might one day look at Qatar. They have a local office and a reason to back companies building from here.
Invest Qatar launched the module on 23 June 2026, developed with QIA. According to Invest Qatar's announcement, it brings fund discovery and the application process into one platform and is open to all Gateway members. The process is:
The initial line-up named in the launch announcement was: Tech Venture Fund by Qatar Science & Technology Park (as ecosystem partner), A-Typical Ventures, B Capital, Builders VC MENA, Deerfield, The Utopia Studio, Founders Circle Capital, Greycroft, Human Capital, Ion Pacific, Liberty City Ventures, Rasmal Ventures, Shorooq, Speedinvest and The Radical Fund. Invest Qatar described the network as growing, and its October statement refers to 16 funds. Check the live list in the module rather than relying on any published version, including this one.
A direct submission route makes it easy to send the same deck to every fund at once. Resist that. The following is general fundraising guidance, not a description of how any specific fund screens deals.
Fund managers screening a steady flow of inbound pitches decide quickly. As general guidance:
Qatar National Vision 2030 aims for a diversified, knowledge-based economy, and the Third National Development Strategy gives the private sector a bigger role in getting there. Startup Qatar is the main vehicle for the startup side of that agenda. The Fund of Funds brings in international venture capital. The Gateway module turns that capital into something a founder can actually reach. Alongside it, QDB's Startup Qatar Investment Program offers a separate, direct-investment route; its target was raised to QAR 1 billion by 2030. Founders raising now have more locally committed capital to approach than at any point before 2024, and international recognition of the programme can help draw in more.
