Web Summit Qatar 2027 opens at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) on 31 January and runs until 3 February, according to the official event site. That gives founders roughly thirteen weeks, and most of that time matters more than the four days themselves. The startups that leave a summit with investor follow-ups and pilot conversations usually did the work in advance: they applied to the right programme, wrote a profile investors actually read, booked meetings early and planned the follow-up before they landed. This guide sets out how startup selection works and a week-by-week plan to make the 2027 edition count.

Why this edition is worth preparing for

The 2026 edition set a high bar. The Government Communications Office reported a record 30,274 participants from 127 countries, 1,637 startups and close to 1,000 investors, with Web Summit's Paddy Cosgrave noting a 27% increase in investors on the previous year. Local participation grew too: 247 Qatari startups took part, up 147% compared with 2024.

For 2027, the fourth edition, more than 70 global partners had already joined by early September, and trade delegations are expected from countries including the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Türkiye and Bahrain. More investors and more delegations also mean more competition for attention, so a plan matters.

How startups are selected: ALPHA, BETA and GROWTH

Every startup starts the same way: by applying to the startup programme on the Web Summit Qatar website, which now carries an "Apply for 2027" option. Web Summit describes three steps: a conversation with its specialist team, assessment and selection, then preparation with a startup success team.

Web Summit's published guide, How we select our startups, describes three tracks. It was written for the first Qatar edition, so treat it as the latest published guidance rather than confirmed 2027 rules:

  • ALPHA is for companies in the pre-investment stage or with less than US$1 million in funding.
  • BETA is for companies that have "launched successfully" and may have joined startup programmes at earlier Web Summit events. No funding threshold is stated.
  • GROWTH is for companies "experiencing considerable growth and expanding globally". Web Summit says many GROWTH startups have raised more than US$3 million, but describes this as typical rather than a hard cut-off.

Each application is scored out of 100 across four criteria: growth potential, impact, product and team, and pitch quality. The published ALPHA package includes three summit passes, one day of exhibition space, access to the Startup Showcase and PITCH, a profile on the website and app, Startup Lounge access and a dedicated startup success manager. Web Summit's pages do not publish 2027 package prices or an application deadline, so confirm both directly with its team before you budget.

The 13-week plan

The schedule below is general guidance, built around the features Web Summit itself describes. Adjust it to your stage.

Weeks 13–11 (now to mid-November): decide and apply

  • Pick the track that honestly matches your funding and traction, and apply early. Selection is assessment-based, and early applicants have more time to prepare with the startup success team.
  • Set one primary goal for the summit, such as ten qualified investor conversations, three pilot leads or two distribution partners. Every later decision should serve it.
  • Watch for the Road to Web Summit Qatar bootcamp. QNA describes it as a programme to "prepare a cohort of Qatari startups for investor meetings and the PITCH stage competition at Web Summit Qatar 2027". Its organiser, dates and application route had not been published at the time of writing.

Weeks 10–7 (mid-November to mid-December): build the assets

  • Write your startup profile as if it were a pitch. Web Summit's own advice is that investors use profiles to decide whom to meet: "Think of your profile as visual marketing." State the problem, customer, traction and raise in plain numbers.
  • Tighten the deck. Web Summit notes the deck is used in selection, and quotes Indico Capital's Cristina Fonseca on investors wanting "proof that you're doing it right". Our guide to building a seed pitch deck covers the structure.
  • Apply for PITCH. The startup competition, now branded PITCH Powered by Jusour, is reached through the startup programme application. Web Summit's guidance describes it as open to exhibiting ALPHA and BETA startups that have raised less than US$5 million. The 2026 winner was Plantaform, a Canadian agritech company.

Weeks 6–3 (mid-December to mid-January): fill the calendar

  • Investor meetings. Web Summit runs pre-scheduled, 15-minute meetings between investors and "the most promising startups" in its programme. Fifteen minutes is short: prepare a two-minute opening and three questions you want answered.
  • Mentor Hours. These are pre-scheduled, 45-minute sessions with a business expert, open to ALPHA and BETA startups on a first-come, first-served basis. Book early, and pick the track (Lead, Engage, Build or Grow) that matches your biggest gap.
  • Research the attendee list. Use the event app to shortlist investors whose thesis and cheque size fit, and contact them before the summit rather than hoping to meet them on the floor.

Weeks 2–1 and summit week: execute

  • Rehearse your pitch to time. Web Summit's Diogo Ramalho puts it simply: "Make sure you communicate clearly."
  • Design the stand around one message and one call to action, such as booking a demo or scanning for the data room.
  • Log every conversation the same day: name, interest, next step and deadline.

Week +1: follow up

Send personalised follow-ups within 48 hours, with the specific material each person asked for. A summit is a lead-generation event; the value is realised in the weeks after it.

Use the local ecosystem around the summit

Qatari institutions use the summit as a showcase, and local founders can benefit. At the 2026 edition, Invest Qatar's Startup Qatar Pavilion brought together QFZ, QFC, MCIT, QDB, Media City Qatar, Jusour and others to offer setup, funding and advisory support, and QSTP presented 30 incubated startups and highlighted 24 supported companies in the startup zone. Plans for 2027 have not yet been announced. If you are incubated or funded by one of these bodies, ask now whether they will host startups or arrange introductions in 2027.

The Vision 2030 connection

Web Summit Qatar sits within the wider Startup Qatar effort to build a knowledge-based economy under Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy. The growth in Qatari startup participation shows the ecosystem is maturing. The next step is converting visibility into contracts, follow-on capital and companies that scale from Doha. Arriving with a clear goal and a follow-up system is how individual founders contribute to that.

What to do next

  • This week: choose your track and submit your startup programme application.
  • By mid-November: set one measurable summit goal and draft your profile.
  • By mid-December: finalise your deck and PITCH application, and ask your incubator or funder about 2027 plans.
  • From January: book investor meetings and Mentor Hours, and contact shortlisted investors directly.
  • After the summit: follow up within 48 hours and track every lead to a next step.
