Doha, Qatar - The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has launched a phased update of registered commercial activities for existing companies in Qatar, as part of a wider effort to align business activity classifications with the Unified Economic Guide for the Classification of Economic Activities in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The update, which came into effect on 1 June 2026, is designed to create a clearer and more unified classification system for companies operating in Qatar. It aims to improve the quality of business data, enhance transparency, simplify procedures, and reduce overlap between similar commercial activities.

For business owners, the most important point is straightforward: the update will be carried out automatically and does not require any action from companies.

What the Update Means

According to the Ministry, the initiative will not change the nature of a company’s activity or affect its commercial registration. Instead, it focuses on reorganising and updating how commercial activities are classified within official systems.

This means existing companies will continue to operate as usual, while their registered activities are brought in line with the approved GCC classification framework.

The move also supports Qatar’s broader efforts to modernise the business environment and make government systems more consistent, accurate, and easier to navigate for both the private sector and public entities.

Why It Matters for Businesses

Accurate commercial activity classification is more than just an administrative detail. It helps government entities better understand the structure of the market, supports more efficient licensing and regulatory procedures, and gives investors and businesses a clearer reference point when dealing with official systems.

By reducing duplication and overlap between activities, the update may also make it easier for companies to identify the correct classifications for their operations in the future.

For Qatar’s private sector, this kind of system improvement supports a more transparent and predictable business environment, especially as the country continues to attract entrepreneurs, investors, and companies across different sectors.

Three-Phase Implementation Plan

The Ministry said the update will be implemented in three consecutive phases.

Phase One: Companies with Directly Matched Activities

The first phase began on 1 June 2026. It covers companies whose registered commercial activities correspond directly to a specific activity under the Unified Classification of Economic Activities.

Phase Two: Activities Linked to Multiple Classifications

The second phase will begin on 15 June 2026. This stage will cover commercial activities that may correspond to more than one activity under the adopted classification framework.

Phase Three: Mixed Commercial and Industrial Activities

The third phase will begin on 30 June 2026. It will focus on companies with mixed activities, including those that combine commercial and industrial operations.

No Action Required from Business Owners

MoCI confirmed that the update process will be completed automatically according to the approved classification. Business owners and existing companies are not required to submit applications, visit ministry offices, or make changes themselves.

The Ministry also stressed that the update will not affect the legal nature of registered activities or existing commercial registrations.

Supporting Qatar’s Economic Modernisation

The update reflects Qatar’s ongoing push to strengthen the efficiency of its business ecosystem. By aligning local commercial activity classifications with a GCC-wide framework, the country is helping create a more harmonised and transparent environment for companies, investors, and regulators.

While the change may appear technical, it plays an important role in building stronger economic data, improving government services, and supporting long-term private sector growth.
