BuzzGage | Evidence Insight | Doha, Qatar

Doha-founded BuzzGage’s latest evidence brief, developed through UCL EdTech Labs, shows why diagnosing the type of problem comes before designing the response.

BuzzGage, a Qatar-founded EdTech startup that helps education systems measure student wellbeing and engagement, has published a new evidence brief from its work with a state-funded school in London.

The work was developed within the University College London (UCL) ecosystem, through UCL EdTech Labs, the university’s flagship EdTech programme. It is a story about what happens when measurement tells a school it has been looking in the wrong place.

The Finding

The school ran a full-cycle, student-facing programme to improve how students experience their physical learning spaces, from cleanliness and comfort to shared areas.

Students engaged with it. The measure still did not improve.

Because the programme was well designed and well received, the result was informative rather than ambiguous: student motivation was not the limiting factor. The missing piece was a responsive loop between what students reported and what the school’s facilities could act on.

The Lesson: Diagnose Before You Intervene

Some school challenges respond to student agency, such as tutor programming and student voice. Others are structural, shaped by maintenance, resources and operational accountability, and only school leadership can move them.

A school that treats a structural issue as a behaviour problem spends effort where it cannot pay off. Measurement that shows the difference is what lets leaders choose the right response.

From Diagnostic Finding to Structural Inquiry

Rather than intensify a programme that had reached its ceiling, the school changed course.

It is now testing a direct reporting protocol: visible QR codes in learning areas let students and staff flag environmental issues straight to the facilities team. The protocol is owned by Heads of Section and the Student Council, with a target of resolving non-urgent issues within 48 hours.

Student agency, which was genuine throughout, is now routed through a mechanism that can act on it. The next cycle will test whether closing that loop moves the measure.

Why It Matters for Qatar’s Tech Ecosystem

This is a Qatar-founded company applying rigorous, candid measurement in an international school system, and publishing a finding that complicates the story rather than flattering it.

It reflects the kind of evidence discipline Qatari EdTech will need to earn trust beyond the region, and it points toward measurement that helps leaders act, not just report.

Evidence Status

This is an internal evaluation with a shareable methodology. It is not peer-reviewed or independently verified, no control group was used, and results from the next cycle are not yet available.
